7 Silly Questions w/ Wonder Villains!

Hailing from Derry, North Ireland, Wonder Villains are Eimear Coyle, Cheylene Murphy, Ryan McGroarty and Kieran Coyle. Though fresh out of high school, these remarkable youngsters make the kind of energetic synth pop most indie rock veterans go their whole lives wishing they could create. Wonder Villains brand of pop is so infectious and so joyous that I can't seem to stop myself from hitting the repeat button so I can hear it over and over and over again.

During the past year or so, Wonder Villains have won the NI Music awards 'Contenders' title, received play nationally on BBC Radio 1 (Daytime & Specialist), Radio 2, 6 Music, XFM, Q, Absolute Radio and they bagged their debut national TV performance on ESPN's Talk Of The Terrace show, played at SXSW, shared the bill with tons of great indie bands, and have arranged for multiple singles to be released in 2012. How they found time to answer our ridiculous questions is a complete mystery, but we are thrilled they did.

What's the most embarrassing band you loved as a kid?
Eimear: Well me and Cheylene were obviously massive Spice Girls fans but we still think they’re great!
Cheylene: Yeah, awesome!
Kieran: I’m pretty sure we had every Now! Compilation from about Now 40 through 50. Some great and embarrassing bands on there.
Eimear: Now 44 was the best!

What is the first record you bought?
Eimear: Ooh! This is a really good story!
Cheylene: Amazingly, me and Eimear both bought the same single as our first ever record even though we didn’t know each other at the time.
Eimear: It was Girls Aloud’s Sound of the Underground.
Ryan: Kiss – Love Gun. Still lethal!
Kieran: When I started playing in my first band I didn’t have one CD to my name so the guys took me out to buy one. I got Greenday’s International Superhits on their recommendation and loved it.

Unicorns...or Narwhals? Who would win in a fight?
Eimear: Well we thought about it a lot and we can’t decide.
Cheylene: We think narwhals would have the edge attacking from the water but unicorns have blood that keeps you alive.
Eimear: It’s a tough call. Probably the Narwhals you know. And Mr. Narwhal is great in Elf.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you on the road?
Eimear: The trailer story is bad. We were driving down to a big show in Dublin, which is about a 3 hour drive for us. When we got there we realized we left behind the keys to the trailer which had all our gear locked in it.
Kieran: We had hammers and axes and saws trying to get it opened.
Eimear: And running and shouting and screaming. But we did it!
Kieran: I’d say we were a pretty funny sight. Luckily it was on Dublin back street so I don’t think anyone saw the drama.

Who has the worst van etiquette?
Eimear: I don’t think we’re too bad in the van. We all live together at the minute and we’re much better behaved in the van than at home.
Cheylene: Because we have a driver keeping an eye on us!
Kieran: Although, we’ve only been on a few short tours so far. Maybe ask us again in a year’s time!

Who is in heavy rotation on your iPod?
Eimear: It’s dangerous when I click on Weezer when I’m making a playlist. Every song makes the cut.
Cheylene: Same with me for Beyoncé!
Kieran: Ash
Ryan: To be honest, I’ve been listening to Chic flat-out. I don’t know what to think about that!

What is the worst argument over nothing that you got into with each other after being road weary and exhausted?
Eimear: There was that time Cheylene got really annoyed with me because she was really hungover in the van and I kept trying to film it for the podcast.
Cheylene: I stand by getting annoyed, you kept poking me!
Eimear: It would have made really good footage! haha

7 Silly Questions w/ Evans The Death!

Wonderful UK band Evans The Death's self-titled debut album is coming out Tuesday May, 1st on Slumberland Records (Fortuna Pop! in the UK). Named after the undertaker in Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood, Evans the Death comprise of Dan Moss (guitar, vocals), Katherine Whitaker (vocals, keys), Olly Moss (guitar), Rob Mitson (drums), and newest member Lan McCardle (bass) – original guitarist Matt Gill having left the band following the completion of the album. Truly, there have been few indie pop bands that have burst onto the scene with such beautiful, lush pop ferocity while somehow maintaining dignified and thoughtful lyrics. Tracks like Telling Lies, I'm So Unclean, and Wet Blanket really highlight their strengths while exposing absolutely zero weaknesses.

Evans the Death have been given extensive airtime on BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6Music, as well being made John Kennedy’s ‘Xposure Big One’ on XFM. An extensive UK tour earlier this year and constant gigging in London has helped to hone their performances into thrilling, energy-packed live shows. Why they agreed to answer our highly ridiculous questions is beyond us, we are just thankful they did!

What's the most embarrassing band you loved as a kid?
Katherine: At 10 I was so obsessed with No Doubt that I spent a two week holiday pestering my parents to find me a pair of lime green/bright pink fishnet cut offs because Gwen Stefani had some, and at the end of the holiday I was literally banned by my parents from talking about Gwen Stefani ever, ever again in my house. Lan: I used to love Usher and had a huge crush on him. I had pretty much all of his albums. I'm really into Death Cab For Cutie right now, which is mortifying for most of the rest of the band, but I'm not ashamed of this at all. In fact I'm making them listen to it right now.
Dan: I used to love Mike Oldfield which isn't really a band but it got me through my pube years, Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge and Ommadawn are saints to me, you dig?

What is the first record you bought?
Dan: Genuinely the first record I bought was Different Class by Pulp. That is cool. I once wrote a letter to Jarvis, enclosed with a very intensive sketch of their album cover to 'His 'n' Hers', and I got a very polite letter back, saying 'are you not too young?'. I'm old enough now, Jarv.
Lan: I can't remember but I'm going to say it was a Destiny's Child album when there were still four of them. My favourite incarnation of Destiny's Child.
Katherine: Don't know, but I'm told I used to dance in circles round my living room when I was a toddler singing 'Hanga DJ hanga DJ', not quite understanding the Smiths lyrics at 4 years old.

Sasquatch...or Yeti? Who would win in a fight?
Lan: I always thought they were the same. I'd say I'd win.
Dan: Yeti would win because it is slimier
Katherine: I am slimier, I would win.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you on the road?
Dan: Our old guitarist and very good friend Matt went on tour with us to Cardiff.
Katherine: He did a triple whammy of bad: he made a lady cry, he pissed on a grave (and got a bit arrested for it) and then he put coins in our hotel door key hole so we couldn't get in for bloody hours and I had my prom the next day. Matt, if you're out there, I will always love you.

Who has the worst van etiquette?
Katherine: Me, I sick on everyone. No one likes it. Someone who remains anonymous forever picks, and eats bogeys from, their nose. On tour.
Dan: Bogeys on tour

Who is in heavy rotation on your iPod?
Lan: I really like the new Lotus Plaza album, also I'm listening to Veronica Falls' album quite a lot. I'm really into Fantasy Rainbow right now, I bought his EPs a few weeks ago and they're already on my Top 25 Most Played on iTunes. Also Playlounge, who we've played with a couple of times, they're ace. I really like Joanna Gruesome as well, we're playing with them at Indietracks so I'm excited about that.
Dan: I usually listen to a load of bollocks.
Katherine: My ipod is broken but I listen mainly to Motown and also Rihanna, and I am being taught about music I should like by above members of my band. It's working, some of it's actually pretty good.

What is the worst argument over nothing that you got into with each other after being road weary and exhausted?
Katherine: We don't argue, we are awfully serene and wonderful with each other all the time. If anything you'd want to have an argument over how horribly well we all get on with each other, because we're a bit like this really beautiful, loving family.
Lan: I haven't been 'on the road' with ETD yet but I can pretty much verify that that's not true. At all.
Katherine: Well, fuck off then Lan. Peace and love <3
Dan: We fight about who reigns supreme, but everyone knows.. right?

Merge Records Helps Organize Concert To Defeat Amendment One

Merge Records is teaming up with the Haw River Ballroom, Cat's Cradle and others in opposition to North Carolina's Amendment One including the Coalition to Protect ALL North Carolina Families - to throw a Benefit Concert with Bob Mould, David Cross, Stuart McLamb of The Love Language, Tig Notaro, Amber Tamblyn and Superchunk (Acoustic Duo.) The concert will be held on May 6 at the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, NC. Limited tickets are available to this special seated event for a donation of $80 and a limited edition silk-screened poster of the event designed by Matthew Klimas is included in the ticket price.

On September 13th, the North Carolina Legislature proposed an amendment to the Constitution that would ban legal recognition for all unmarried couples, strip protections and benefits from families across our state, hurt our business climate and economic development and put our children in danger. We are proud to be a member of a coalition of groups, individuals and families dedicated to defeating this amendment at the polls on May 8 and protecting North Carolina from the harms it represents. For more information about the Coalition to Protect NC Families, visit their website.

Devin - Masochist Video!

Devin’s debut full-length album, Romancing, is out now on Frenchkiss Records. The video for the album’s first single Masochist. This song kicks some serious ass. There's been too much mid-tempo music in college radio for too long. Hopefully Devin will help light a fire under people's asses and we can put the rawk back into indie rock.

7 Silly Questions w/ Folklore!

Folklore is a mini-orchestra lead by veteran indie rocker Jimmy Hughes with musical roots in both Athens, GA and Philadelphia, PA. The band released two concept albums in 2007/08 and a new one in 2011 titled Home Church Road. Lyrically the songs are story based, but musically the band creates a landscape that is orchestrated in whichever direction the prose dictates using woodwinds, brass, strings, and more. Hughes may be best known for his work as guitarist for Elf Power and their collaboration with Vic Chesnutt during 2009's Dark Developments. An indie journeyman, Hughes has also been the driving force behind the fantastic band Boy's Star Library, and also performed with Bugs Eat Books and Masters of the Hemisphere. Currently, when not spending time with Folklore, he teaches music to children ages 1-5 at an arts-based preschool in downtown Philadelphia.

But we can't make Folklore all about Hughes. Without his cast of fantastic musicians, Folklore would not soar to such fantastic heights. This is really well illustrated in their coveted second Daytrotter Session! I caught up to the crew while they were preparing for their hectic April tour schedule. Thankfully, they agreed to take sometime out of their busy schedule to answer my highly dubious questions.

What's the most embarrassing band you loved as a kid?
David Specht: Mary Kate & Ashley Olson had an album called "Brother For Sale" and my sister had it and the songs were pretty good.
Jordan Burgis: Rod Stewart Unplugged was the only music I knew existed until I was almost 10.
Aaron Jollay: Live
Jason Henn: Probably Van Hagar
Jimmy Hughes: I agree with Aaron about the band Live. Also Red Hot Chili Peppers... they were one of the first concerts I saw and I loved them at the time... not so much anymore.

What is the first record you bought?
David Specht: Beach Boys "Endless Summer" all the hits - brought it in to show and tell in 1st grade.
Jordan Burgis: Genesis "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". 15 years later, still haven't made it past side 1.
Aaron Jollay: Nevermind
Jon Croxton: I'm pretty sure it was either "Raising Hell" by Run DMC or "Licence To Ill" by the Beastie Boys. Whichever it was, My brothers and I had to play it really low so our parents couldnt hear it!
Jason Henn: The first Monkees album on cassette at the Richmond, Indiana, Target.
Jimmy Hughes: Huey Lewis And The News "Four". 2nd album was "Raising Hell" by Run DMC. They were definitely cassettes.

Unicorns vs. Narwhals? Who would win in a fight?
David Specht: Narwhals would win: It's a tooth instead of a horn so it's like a big molar! Chomp Chomp Chomp!
Jordan Burgis: Racoonicorns ftw. Duh!
Aaron Jollay: Always gonna be more narwhals than unicorns, eventually this unicorn will get its ass kicked
Jon Croxton: I'm gonna have to say a tie on this one. I mean, would the two even be able to fight? I picture them just both staring and bucking at each other, one in the water, one on the land. Neither with the balls to actually enter the others turf. I can also picture all the other creatures egging them on, but in the end, the master wizard breaks it up and tells everyone to get back to class.
Jason Henn: That depends on which Narwhal, the toothed whale or the submarine. Unicorn vs. whale: unicorn wins. Unicorn vs. submarine: tie.
Jimmy Hughes: Let's break it down... Unicorn is just a horse (nothing more) with a horn and it's imaginary. Narwhal is actually real and way weirder that the made up horse this. So if it's a freak-out battle (and not a physical fight) then I say Narwhal wins for being super-freaky and real on top of that. If they were both real then I think they wouldn't fight and they would be best friends.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you on the road?
David Specht: Pizza every day? Not sure if that's even funny but i kind of love it!
Jordan Burgis: There was the time Jimmy picked up a hitchhiker who turned out to be a vampire...
Aaron Jollay: Not sure, mostly wild stories are from Dark Meat trips.
Jason Henn: It didn't really "happen" to us, but the most van fun ever was probably Jon Croxton iPod DJ'ing tracks by The Masta Cylindaz Feat. Lil Flip Scoldjah.
Jimmy Hughes: I pooted!

Who has the worst van etiquette?
David Specht: No comment!
Jordan Burgis: Depends on who has the buck call...
Aaron Jollay: Me (see above)
Jason Henn: Jon Croxton, hands down. That guy is a total dick.
Jimmy Hughes: Me, I pooted!

Who is in heavy rotation on your iPod?
David Specht: Beach Boys "Smile" sessions , Godley & Creme "L"
Jordan Burgis: Agincourt, Earles and Jensen, CCR
Aaron Jollay: Caetano Veloso, Hawkwind, Nerves
Jason Henn: Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk" all the way through at least once a day. Other than that, the new Jandek, White Life and Other Colors.
Jimmy Hughes: Creedence Clearwater Revival, Forest Fire, Nana Grizol "Ruth", Fleetwood Mac "Rumors", John Cale, Sebadoh, Buffalo Stance, Flaming Lips...

What is the worst argument over nothing that you got into with each
other after being road weary and exhausted?
David Specht: I don't remember!
Jordan Burgis: Who's going to buy the CD player shaped like a full size guitar, DAMMIT? (see attached picture)
Aaron Jollay: We never fight
Jason Henn: One time I slept with Scott Churchman's wife, Michelle, and he wrote a scathing song about it called "I Saw Her Again." Wait, I'm thinking of The Mamas and The Papas. On second thought, I don't remember any real Folklore arguments.
Jimmy Hughes: We really don't fight... it's true! I think that makes us the best band ever.
