1995 Revisited - East River Pipe - Poor Fricky

I am more than a little unbiased when it comes to FM Cornog aka East River Pipe. After all, I credit the man with piquing my curiosity in indie rock and making me want to become a musician. The reclusive one man show, recording alone in his apartment on a Tascam 388 mini-studio, has quietly produced some of the most charming indie rock records of all time. Poor Fricky may be perhaps the greatest of all of his 20+ releases. With songs like "Superstar in France", "Marty" and "Ah, Dictaphone", it is almost impossible not to fall in love with the music. You may recall "Superstar in France" being covered by Lambchop on the Thriller album.

The difficulties of FM Cornog's young life are well documented. If not for his chance encounter meeting his wife Barbara Powers, East River Pipe may well never have existed and the world may never have been graced with these wonderful songs. There is a great bio you can read on the Merge website: East River Pipe . Clearly the history of indie rock is far richer for having Cornog's contributions.
